What is Making Strides Against Breast Cancer?
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the American Cancer Society's nationwide series of walking events to raise funds and awareness to end breast cancer. Nationwide, more than 270 Making Strides walks occur each year, and each one is a powerful and inspiring opportunity to unite as a community to honor breast cancer survivors, raise awareness about what we can do to stay well, and raise money to help fight the disease with breast cancer research, information and services, and access to mammograms for women who need them. Walks range in distance from 3 to 5 miles.
Who can participate?
Anyone can participate! From corporate CEO's to schoolchildren, the success of Making Strides events depends on passionate individuals who commit to raising money, the people who donate to them, and our generous sponsors. Friends, families, neighbors, classmates, and coworkers can form teams. Organizations or businesses can also sponsor teams of walkers. Or, you can walk as an individual. Note: Participants in wheelchairs should contact their local American Cancer Society office prior to the event for additional information.
We also need event volunteers to help with registration, water stations, information, and many other important activities. Making Strides events offer something for everyone. How can people get involved in the Making Strides events and the American Cancer Society's fight against breast cancer?
There are numerous ways to help create a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays. You can:
- Walk in a Making Strides event and raise donations. The online tools on our Web site make fundraising easy.
- Be a team leader and gather a group of any size to walk with you and help raise money to fight breast cancer. Contact your local American Cancer Society office for a team leader kit.
- Double your fundraising dollars through a matching gifts program. Ask your company's human resources department for more details.
- Sponsor a Making Strides walker with a generous, tax-deductible contribution.
- Volunteer at the event by donating your time and talent.
- Help people facing breast cancer get well by volunteering with one of the Society's breast cancer programs in your community.

How much money does the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk raise for the American Cancer Society?
Since 1993, 8 million walkers across the United States have raised more than $460 million to help fight breast cancer through Making Strides events. In 2011 alone, 1 million walkers across the country collected more than $60 million to help fight this disease.
What happens with the money raised from Making Strides Against Breast Cancer?
Funds raised through Making Strides Against Breast Cancer support the American Cancer Society's fight to end breast cancer. Specifically, these dollars are used to make a difference in the following ways:
- Helping people take steps to reduce their risk of breast cancer or find it early when it is most treatable
- Investing in research to find, prevent, treat, and cure the disease
- Providing free information and services to help people facing breast cancer today - when and where they need it - including transportation, lodging, wigs, support programs, financial assistance, and more
- Ensuring access to mammograms for women who need them, and encouraging lawmakers to pass laws to defeat breast cancer

Is there a registration fee or a minimum amount to raise?
Most Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks do not have registration fees* and there is no minimum amount to raise to participate. However, walkers do raise much-needed funds to help the American Cancer Society save lives and fight breast cancer. Each walker is encouraged to raise at least $100, but to set an even higher goal. We encourage people who can't make a donation or who aren't able to ask others to contribute to come out and show support by walking in your local event.

How do I turn in the money I raise?
You can turn in your money on the day of the event or your supporters can donate online through our secure Web site. If you have not finished collecting your funds by the day of the event, or if you are unable to attend, send your contribution form and remaining donations to your local American Cancer Society office. Find your local event, and sign up to start raising money online. The sooner you get started, the more strides we'll make together to help end breast cancer.
