Carla Bailey's Story

Happy 40th! You have breast cancer...

Hi! Let me tell you why I am walking with Making Strides Against Breast Cancer on October 27! I am a 3 year survivor! My story begins in September of 2008. I went for my yearly checkup at the doctor, and he told me it was time for my 40-year mammogram. I called, and they told me they had an opening in January 2009. I went and was called a few days later, saying they needed to take more pictures. I went by myself and my husband Brian met me there and waited. More pictures and an ultrasound later, the nurse asked me if anyone was with me. She sent Brian into the room and the doctor followed. The doctor told me that he was positive that I had breast cancer. I met with a surgeon the next day, who did a biopsy within a few days and the following Monday, February 2, 2009, I was told over the phone that I did in fact have breast cancer. The word “cancer” is terrifying. You feel as if this is the end, until you are told otherwise. I had a lumpectomy, followed by chemo and radiation. I lost all of my hair (which was definitely the hardest part for me). I finished all of my treatments by October 2009. That summer of 2010, I went for another mammogram and was told I might have cancer again. They biopsied and said it was inconclusive. I had another lumpectomy that July. I was then told that everything was fine, and I was actually cancer-free! I know this may sound crazy to you, but breast cancer 2009 was the best thing that ever happened to me (besides marrying my best friend and having Jordan and Heather)! It woke me up to what a wonderful life I have and the amazing people in it! Never take a day for granted. It is truly a gift from God! I felt like my faith was being tested to see how I would handle this situation given to me. God walked with me through the valley and over the mountain! I pray that I have been a testimony to whoever knows my story. <3
